Wagering on puck lines in hockey is a popular bet to place on individual hockey games. This bet is a little different than most sports bets because it is combination of a point spread and a money line. When you place this wager, you have to take into consideration both the hockey betting odds that are being paid and the hockey point spread to cover.

Puck Line Example

The easiest way to explain hockey puck line bets is through the use of an example. Puck line bets look a little complicated at first but they actually aren’t all that bad. In this example, we have an upcoming match between the Montreal Canadiens and the New Jersey Devils with these example odds at top sports gambling sites.

  • Canadiens -1.5 -275
  • Devils +1.5 +235

We can break this puck line bet into two simple parts

1. First of all, note the positive and negative 1.5 next to each team. That column explains the hockey point spread. The Canadiens are considered the stronger team in this example so they are giving 1.5 points to the Devils. This means that the Canadiens have to win by 2 goals or more for them to be considered the winner of the bet at sports betting sites.

The Devils are the underdogs here so the hockey betting site is giving them 1.5 points. This means they will be credited with a win if they win the game outright or if they only lose by one goal.

2. The -275 and +235 explain how you will be paid if your puck line bet wins. The Canadiens have a -275 because they are the favorites. This means you will have to risk $2.75 for every $1.00 in potential winnings on your wager. So if you make a $275 bet on the Canadiens and they win by 2 goals or more, you will win $100 on your hockey bet.

The Devils get a +235 because they are the underdogs. This means that for every $1.00 you risk, you will win $2.35. So if you wager $100 on the Devils and they win (or lose by only 1 goal), you will get $235 in winnings.

Half

Overview

As you can see, there are a couple things that you need to consider when betting on the hockey puck line. It may all look a little confusing at first, but if you break each bet down into two separate parts, it becomes a lot more manageable.

What is the point spread

If you take a look at the point spread, you can come up with your own idea of how likely either team is to cover the spread. At that point, you can determine if the odds for either team are juicy enough to make it worth betting on. In the example above, the Devils are the clear underdog but some people will feel like the point spread plus the high payout make them worth the risk.

Explain Half Point Spread

Conversely, some people would look at the Canadiens and believe they are strong enough that it’s worth giving up 1.5 points and risking more money for a limited win online betting option. It all depends on each bettor’s knowledge and research of the game.

Explain The Point Spread System

Note that half points at hockey betting websites are often used in hockey puck line bets to prevent the bet from ending in a push. With a half point, there is no way the game ends up on exactly the point spread predicted by the hockey sportsbook. Otherwise, a lot of hockey bets would end up in ties and that would get boring real fast.
