We’ve seen unexpected plays from Mike Leach’s Washington State team before, but this one against No. 12/11 Oregon on Saturday night was executed with a brilliant combination of trickery and pure power.
With less than five minutes left in the first quarter, the No. 25/23 Cougars lined up in a peculiar formation — and it would be confusing to just about anyone — on first-and-10 on Oregon’s 24-yard line. The ball is all the way over on the right, while Washington State quarterback Gardner Minshew and running back James Williams are to the left.
A “swinging gate” play, Minshew took the long snap and quickly passed it off to Williams, who tried to go left but was forced right and muscled his way passed the line of scrimmage. But just when it looked like he was done, Williams spun out away from the Ducks’ defenders and powered his way down the right sideline for a 24-yard touchdown.
Oregon coach Mario Cristobal looked like his head was going to explode after seeing that, and he appeared to be under the impression that this wacky formation isn’t legal.
Look at this again. Here’s where the ball is before the snap:
We’ve seen something similar to this from the Cougars earlier this season. In Week 1 against Wyoming, they lined up almost the exact same way but pitched the ball directly to Williams that time.
Afterward, Leach said the play is called Big Gulp Left, so maybe this one is Big Gulp Right or Big Gulp Left Improv if Williams was originally supposed to go left.
Here are a couple more angles of this incredible play from Satuday’s Week 8 game.
Despite being outranked by Oregon, Washington State actually entered this game as a slight favorite over the Ducks and had a 27-0 lead at halftime. It’s the first time

All roads and signs are leading to an Oregon win and cover here. Washington State is really bad. This Washington State team is a far cry from the team that started 6-0 and was receiving national ranking votes. They are just 3-14 since winning The Wooden Legacy Tournament. Washington State has an inability to get to the free throw line. Wazzu shoots an absolutely abysmal .238 free throws per field goal attempt, the fifth-worst mark in college basketball. Their average margin of loss in their last 5 games is 20.2 points. I would bet against them being able to keep it closer than 15 points at Oregon. The smart money here is Oregon -15. Check out top rated sportsbooks for a chance to build your bankroll in time for March Madness. I would like to mention I also like the OVER 149.5 points. I can see Oregon scoring close to 90 points and Washington State scoring close to 70.
